Information on the 5 S’s

The 5 S’s is a framework of five techniques caregivers can use to soothe babies and promote sleep. The 5 S’s are:

  • Swaddling
  • Side/Stomach Positioning
  • Shushing
  • Swinging
  • Sucking

The 5 S’s were created by Dr. Harvey Karp, MD, FAAP, and popularized in his book, The Happiest Baby on the Block. SNOO utilizes 3 of the 5 S’s (Swaddling, Shushing, Swinging) to comfort and calm infants up to 6 months old.
